Tonya Breaux-Shropshire, PhD, DNP, MPH, FNP, RN, is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Scientist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Birmingham, AL.

  • She joined the UAB faculty in August 2009 while pursuing her PhD in Protecting and Restoring Health and research positions. At UAB, she taught and mentored students in the graduate and undergraduate programs.
  • Her research, which has significantly contributed to the understanding of resistant hypertension, is conducted by a clinical scientist under the mentorship of world-renowned hypertension specialists.
  • Dr. Breaux-Shropshire was a VA Quality Scholars (VAQS) fellow at the Birmingham, AL site, where she mentored medical, PhD nursing, and pharmacist students in quality improvement projects.
  • She has received many awards, including the Alabama State Board of Nursing scholarship. Dr. Shropshire has authored/co-authored several peer-reviewed publications.
  • Her educational journey includes a BSN from Loyola University, New Orleans, LA; an MPH in Environmental and Occupational Health and Risk Assessment from Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, LA; and a DNP in Family Nurse Practitioner from Troy University, Troy, Alabama. In addition, she is a Hypertension coach.
